Five Steps to Successfully Battle Addiction

What is addiction?

Although addiction can take on many different forms, the most common types are substance abuse addiction, game addiction and drug addiction. In its most general definition, addiction is a certain condition or illness that prevents people from having any control over what they do, take or use. Although people suffering from addiction may be reluctant to seek help, it is important to realize that it is a problem that plagues many individuals. In fact, studies have shown that addiction is the top healthcare problem in the United States and Europe.

  1. Admit that you have a problem. For many people, this can be the most difficult step. In addition to recognizing that you have a problem, you must be willing to do something about it. This can be a very difficult step for many people who are either unwilling to recognize the problem, or feel that they have lost all control.
  2. Explore treatment options. Since there are many different types of addiction, and different individuals will have varying degrees of addiction, it is important to explore your options and try to determine which will work best for you.
  3. Seek support. For many individuals, battling addiction is the most difficult thing they have ever had to do in their lives. It is unrealistic to believe that this is something you will be able to achieve on your own. It is very important to set up a support network so that you are given the encouragement you need during difficult times. Self help groups have been shown to be very effective forms of therapy for drug addiction and substance abuse addiction.
  4. Substitute your addiction with a healthier alternative. Many people develop addictions as a way to deal with stress. Before they know it, they have developed a very strong dependency. Substituting your addiction for a healthier alternative is an excellent way to shift your energy towards positive things that will enhance your lifestyle. A very good example of this would be replacing an addiction with exercise.
  5. Monitor your cravings. Try to keep tabs on when your cravings kick in and try to avoid these situations. Understanding when you are most susceptible to crack is very important because you will need to try to avoid these situations in the early stages of your recovery.
