Coping with Anxiety Disorders

Although many of us will feel anxiety at some point in our lives, it is important to recognize when your anxiety causes some form of functional impairment in your daily life. There are believed to be many factors that can contribute to the development on anxiety disorders. This includes factors that are both genetic and psychological.

It is believed that certain medical conditions such as anemia and thyroid problems can cause symptoms of anxiety. In addition, caffeine and alcohol can also trigger anxiety in some people. Much like depression, there are different types of anxiety disorders, but it is important to recognize some of the most common symptoms.

Coping with an anxiety disorder

One of the most effective ways to deal with mild forms of this disorder is to understand the source of your anxiety attack. Having an understanding of the source will help you better determine if a real threat actually exists or not. You may also find it beneficial to practice different relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation.

However in some more serious cases, medication will be required. People suffering from different forms of anxiety disorders such as social anxiety are usually treated with antidepressants. Although medications such as Monoamine oxidase inhibitors were originally developed to treat depression, they have also been found to work on patients experiencing anxiety.



Anxiety disorders are usually characterized by both emotional and physical symptoms. This can include the following:

  • Feelings of restlessness and irritability that recur in certain situations. For many people battling anxiety, this can include public spaces. This is exhibits a very common form of the disease which is known as social anxiety.
  • Irrational and excessive fear and worry. It is perfectly normal to feel nervous or uncomfortable in certain stressful situations. However, when the excessive fear prevents you from living your life, it is a good indication that you may be suffering from the disorder.
  • Pounding heart and sweating. However, in more serious cases this is caused by situations and circumstances that are for the most part harmless, such as going to the shopping center.
  • Stomach upsets or dizziness. This is usually present in more serious cases. This can also be more dangerous in certain situations, such as when operating a motor vehicle.

Although everyone will exhibit unique signs, anxiety can usually be easily recognized since there is usually a mixture of both physical and emotional signs.
