Much as the name suggest, a crash diet is a way to lower your calorie intake in order to lose weight in a short period of time. This method usually has a stigma attached to it because of its very low success rate.

However, not all crash diets are unhealthy and unsuccessful. If your goal is to lose weight for an upcoming function, crash diets can help you achieve this goal. However, if you are looking for longer term weight loss, crash diets are less effective.

One crash diet that is believed to be effective is calorie shifting. This entails devoting days to specific foods. For example, on the first day you will eat mainly fruit, on the second day your diet will consist of mainly protein. This cycle will continue for eleven days before resetting.

Another famous crash diet that is believed to be popular among celebrities is the cabbage soup diet. This is where you are allowed to eat all the cabbage soup you desire when you are hungry and limiting your consumption of other foods. Since cabbage is extremely high in fibre, it takes your body a longer time to process it. Since it stays in your system longer, it will leave you feeling full longer.

Are fast diets effective?

Fast diets are no longer used exclusively for religious purposes. Fasting for weight loss has gained momentum throughout the world, as it is also used to cleanse the body of toxins. However, to date, there is little evidence that fasting detoxifies your body. Certain fast diets require participants to only consume water, while others will restrict your consumption to raw foods. It is therefore a more extreme version of the crash diet.

Fasting can actually be harmful and cause you to gain more weight in the long run. The reason for this is because your body will adjust to the new lower calorie intake. It will demand less calories, but also burn less during daily activities. Much like the crash diet, when you return to normal eating habits, it will be much easier to gain the weight back.
